Newell was born in Sydney, Australia, received a Diploma of Applied Science from the Hawkesbury Agricultural College and a Diploma of Education from the Armidale College of Advanced Education, now part of the University of New England.
He has a PhD from James Cook University, a Master of Educational Studies from the University of Newcastle, a Bachelor of Divinity from the Melbourne College of Divinity, a Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland and a Bachelor of Applied Science from the Queensland Institute of Technology.
He completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Hons), (1996) and a Graduate Diploma of Education (1997) at the University of South Australia.
Whilst initially studying medicine, he completed a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education while working on building sites and becoming a member of the NSW Builders Labourers Federation.
He received a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Politics from Curtin University of Technology (1977) and a Diploma of Education from University of Western Australia (1978).
Like his creator, Mr G mentions that he graduated from the Teachers' College of Macquarie University in Sydney, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts, where he mentions majoring in the performing arts (music, drama and dance), and a Diploma of Education.
