Actors who spent time in the Northcott company in their earlier careers include Polly James, Lesley Joseph, John Nettles, Robert Lindsay, Brian Protheroe, Bob Peck, Geraldine James, Caroline John, Celia Imrie, Nick Brimble and Imelda Staunton; and Nicholas Hytner professionally directed his first straight dramas here.

Founded in 1980, the Company grew out of an association between Monica Shallis (1939−2006), Mary G. Evans (born 1934) and the Northcott Theatre, Exeter, then under the direction of Richard Digby Day.
Also in 2006, Buring played Olivia in a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night by Exeter's Northcott Theatre Company, alongside Sara Weymouth and David Gwillim, and appeared in a new play, Seduced, by Michael Kingsbury at London's Finborough Theatre.
