Despite concurrently holding top posts in the country’s biggest corporations at one time or another (among these, he was Chairman of Philippine National Oil Company, Philippine Airlines and Philippine National Bank), Macaraig never took advantage of his positions for personal gain.
Since its founding, CPMI has handled 43 buildings, including landmarks such as the Asian Development Bank, Philippine National Bank Headquarters, BPI Buendia Center and Pacific Star Building.
He was later appointed as the first Filipino corporate lawyer of the Philippine National Bank, Manila Railroad Company and other government corporations.
Lerena was able to retrieve the precious image of the Virgin from a junkyard where it was thrown by the Japanese invaders and brought it to the Archbishop’s Palace in Intramuros, Manila and later to the vaults of the Philippine National Bank for safekeeping.
Additionally, PNB was voted by the consumers for the fourth consecutive year (2003–2007) as Most Trusted Brand - Gold Category from the joint survey of the venerable international publication, Reader's Digest, and global media research giant, ACNielsen, along with a host of other brand leaders in the consumer product categories.

PNB transferred to its new Head Office along Escolta in 1966 and launched the first on-line Electronic Data Processing System in the Far East.

In Japan, employees of the Tokyo branch of the PNB are represented by the union Tozen.
Tozen has a number of local unions at different workplaces, including: The Japan Times, Linguaphone, Philippine National Bank, Syndicat des Employés de l’Institut franco-japonais, Lyceé franco-japonais, Sophia University, Gaba, Japan College of Foreign Languages, Shibaura Institute of Technology, and Simul Academy.
It was then located in the old 12-storey high Philippine National Bank Building in the district of Santa Cruz.
