The submarine was ordered on 24 June 1938 and laid down on 20 April 1939 as K XXVI at the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, Rotterdam.
The submarine was ordered on 8 July 1938 and laid down on 3 August 1939 as K XXVII at the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, Rotterdam.
Major projects of the firm in the period up to the mid-1920s included the district of Heijplaat in the harbour of Rotterdam (1912-1921) — originally built as a garden city (tuindorp) to house the employees of the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij shipping company — and the Amsterdam secondary school Amsterdams Lyceum (1917-1922).
The submarine was laid down in Rotterdam at the shipyard of Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij on 31 May 1930.
The submarine was ordered on 9 June 1937 and laid down on 12 October 1937 as K XXIII at the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, Rotterdam.
The submarine was laid down on 12 November 1937 as K XXIV at the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (RDM) shipyard in Rotterdam.
Two of the subs fell into German hands in May 1940, and duly served in the Kriegsmarine (Nazi-German navy).

The management decided to continue business as usual, although the representative of Queen Wilhelmina (who herself had fled to Britain), general Winkelman, expressedly forbade any work on German military projects.
